Everllence and Danieli Corus join forces to reduce emissions from blast furnaces
New collaboration enables steelmakers to replace part of the coke used in existing blast furnaces with coke oven gas
Everllence and Danieli Corus have signed an exclusive collaboration agreement to develop and supply coke oven gas injection systems for blast furnaces. Combining gas compression with blast furnace injection technology, the partners aim to help steelmakers use a gas already produced at many sites to reduce their reliance on carbon-intensive fuels.
Coke oven gas is produced during the manufacture of coke, which is used in many blast furnaces. Rich in hydrogen, the gas can serve as a reducing agent in the ironmaking process. Many integrated steelworks already produce coke oven gas on site, but typically burn it as fuel elsewhere in the plant. Using it as a reducing agent in the blast furnace instead can partially replace metallurgical coke, reducing the need for carbon-intensive fuels while allowing steelmakers to continue using their existing blast furnace infrastructure.
To put this approach into practice, steelmakers need reliable gas compression and an injection system suited to their blast furnace operations. The collaboration brings together Everllence’s experience in coke oven gas compression and Danieli Corus’s expertise in blast furnace processes and injection technology. Together, the companies will engineer and supply the complete system, supporting customers from feasibility studies and system design through to commissioning, training and operational assistance.
Deepak Verma, Decarbonization Manager at Danieli Corus, says: “Reducing CO₂ emissions from steel production is an industry imperative. Coke oven gas injection is a practical first step for producers that cannot yet transition entirely to direct reduced iron production, let alone hydrogen-based production. We have a responsibility to pursue solutions based on proven technologies that can be implemented in existing plants. By working closely together and drawing on each other’s expertise, Danieli Corus and Everllence can help steelmakers put such a solution into practice.”
Frank Weih, Sales & Tendering Manager Screw Compressors at Everllence, says: “We have supplied compressors for coke oven gas applications since 1954 and understand the demands this gas places on compressor systems. Our role is to provide reliable compression and work with Danieli Corus to integrate it with the blast furnace injection process. By combining our technologies and engineering expertise, we can offer steelmakers a coordinated solution tailored to their plants, from the initial assessment through to operation.”
The partners will work with steel producers to evaluate where coke oven gas injection can be applied and how it can be integrated into their operations.
