Heat pumps delivering impact for district heating

High-performance district heating for 48,000 households

With a total capacity of ~177 MWth, this is the largest seawater-based heat pump system ever built. Designed in partnership with Aalborg Forsyning, it uses four heat pump units to extract thermal energy from seawater and deliver clean, efficient heating to nearly 50,000 homes. The installation reduces emissions by 210,000 tons of CO₂ annually – setting a global benchmark for coastal district heating at scale.

Seamless integration into an existing district heating system

Cologne is home to Germany’s largest river water heat pump, drawing thermal energy from the Rhine to deliver ~150 MWth of heating for 50,000 homes. Everllence supplied a complete turnkey system for RheinEnergie — including three heat pump units and all supporting infrastructure. The result: 100,000 tons of CO₂ saved each year, and one of Europe’s leading references for clean, large-scale district heating.

Clean energy for 25,000 households – delivered by the sea

Esbjerg is home to the largest CO₂-based seawater heat pump currently in operation. Using seawater at 1–15 °C and natural CO₂ as refrigerant, the two-unit system delivers ~70 MWth of thermal output for district heating. Built in collaboration with DIN Forsyning, the installation avoids 120,000 tons of CO₂ annually and proves the feasibility of natural refrigerants at scale.

Everllence delivered the world’s largest air-to-water heat pump for Helen Oy in Helsinki. The single-unit CO₂-based system supplies ~33 MWth of heat for 30,000 households – operating reliably even in temperatures as low as –20 °C. With 26,000 tons of CO₂ saved annually, the project proves that ambient air can power resilient, emission-free energy systems, even in Nordic climates.

Boston is home to the first heat pump in the U.S. capable of producing ~200 °C steam for district energy and industrial applications. Drawing thermal energy from river water, the ~40 MWth system was developed for Kendall Green Energy to deliver thermal energy to a substantial share of Boston’s residential buildings, while simultaneously supplying high-pressure steam to university research facilities for industrial applications.
