Compressed air energy storage – saving power for future use

Meeting changing energy demands with the power of air

Compressed air energy storage (CAES) uses geological reservoirs to store large amounts of energy for long periods of time – a very economical, effective solution for large-scale applications. Everllence (former MAN Energy Solutions) is developing industry-leading equipment and components for CAES processes and storage based on proven technology developed over decades.

Access huge amounts of energy when you need it

As fluctuating renewables become increasingly prevalent, power systems are facing situations where more electricity is produced than needed to cover demand. The solution: Develop effective energy storage systems to save this excess energy, allowing operators to draw on it as needed.

CAES technology allows energy to be stored on a very large scale while ensuring that the grid is stable – for a secure power supply. The CAES process uses electricity to compress and store ambient air under pressure in underground reservoirs, such as caverns and salt mines. When power is required, compressed air is drawn through an air expander to power a generator. To improve round-trip efficiency, thermal storage can also be included in the compressed air energy storage facility.

Everllence CAES compressors and expanders

With decades of experience, Everllence is a leading provider of turbomachinery for Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES). We supplied the compressors for the world’s first large-scale CAES facility in Huntorf, Germany (1978) – still operating today. Our solutions offer high power output, large storage capacity, and multiple energy services, including spinning reserve and black start.

Everllence provides efficient axial-radial compressors for large-scale applications, and expander units up to 180 MW, all backed by over 100 years of in-house expertise. Each system is tailored to balance efficiency and investment cost.

How you benefit:

  • Low capital investment
  • Turbomachinery customized to meet specific CAES processes
  • Best efficiency
  • High availability and reliability
