Creating a sustainable future for ferries

It’s not just where you go. It’s how you get there. Ferries with Everllence engines are setting course for the future with low emissions and reliable efficiency. We meet the flexible power demands of RoPax and RoRo vessels with tailor-made propulsion and power-generation solutions, enabling the use of future fuels and digitalizing operations while always contributing to the safety of passengers and crews.

Cleaning up for everyone’s benefit

Ferries prosper when they offer efficient and reliable services at competitive prices. Climate change has added another decisive factor: Environmental compliance. From 2030 onwards, major European ports, for example, will require zero emissions as per the FuelEU Maritime Regulation. As a result, ferry operators need to plan ahead more than ever by developing compliance roadmaps and using alternative fuels, battery hybrid systems and the like.

As a world-leading engine manufacturer, we understand that fuels and efficient propulsion systems are the key to controlling emissions and operating expenses. We also know there’s no magic bullet. That’s why Everllence offers a broad range of complete packages for highly efficient propulsion and power generation, including dual fuel technologies that can run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), synthetic natural gas (SNG), bio-LNG and biodiesels as well as hybrid propulsion systems.

Everllence methanol-ready ferry engines can be converted to methanol-capable engines as green methanol supplies become available. With the 49/60DF, you can use LNG, SNG, bio-LNG, and biofuels from day one.

We know that fuel costs are one of the main drivers of OPEX, now joined by emission allowance prices, making fuel-efficient operations imperative. Our fuel efficient engines and hybrid systems comply with changing regulations well into the future.

By designing engines with retrofits in mind, we provide long-term planning security. For example, our methanol-ready engines offer low-carbon, high-efficiency propulsion on conventional fuels now, as well as the option to convert to low-carbon methanol whenever you want. Our hybrid systems offer several operating modes that enable efficient operation under widely varying operating conditions or performance requirements.

Ferry engines and solutions portfolio

For RoRo, RoPax, and fast ferries, we offer newbuild engines that run on green fuels as well as retrofits that enable alternative fuels. Our portfolio covers emissions reduction technology, complete propulsion packages, hybrid power solutions, dual fuel technology and digital services. Our range also includes Everllence Alpha CP propellers and the proven HyProp ECO system for improved efficiency, supporting ferries’ varying power profiles.

49/60DF: long-term flexibility for ferries

With its built-in flexibility and low methane slip, the 49/60DF (former MAN 49/60DF) dual fuel engine is set up to comply with emission regulations until 2035, running on LNG. No additional measures are necessary. We will, however, further reduce methane emissions with the development of a new methane-oxidation catalyst. This will ensure the sustainability of the LNG pathway until 2040 and beyond in combination with green LNG.

32/44CR: Efficient methanol-ready solution for ferries

The 32/44CR (former MAN 32/44CR) is ready for retrofit to methanol operation while maintaining its diesel fuel capability. This engine features advanced Everllence technologies, such as the Everllence common rail system, variable valve timing, high-efficiency turbochargers, and the EcoLoad and ECOMAP control systems.

175D: Methanol-ready high-speed engine

Ideal for fast ferries, the 175D (former MAN 175D) is easy to integrate, operate, and maintain – thanks to its compact size and clear-cut design. The most powerful marine high-speed engine on the market meets emissions standards without compromising on efficiency or performance. Long times between overhauls (TBOs) and low fuel consumption ensure the lowest possible OPEX.

Hybrid systems & HyProp ECO: Varying power demands

Hybrid marine propulsion systems are often the best solution for ferries, which have both high and low power demands, frequent maneuverings and seasonally varying operation. HyProp ECO takes the concept to another level: Reduced fuel consumption, as well as lowered CO2, NOx and SOx emissions. Propulsion efficiency does not suffer either – thanks to the innovative Alpha CP propellers that are perfect for ferries’ varying power profiles.
