Can a company really decarbonize entire industries - and set the example for how it’s done?

Last year, Everllence sharpened its sustainability strategy, with one clear result: greater transparency. To mark the publication of the new sustainability report, Dr. Johanna Rauchenberger, Head of Quality & HSE, Product Safety & Sustainability, shares insights into the updated approach. She highlights how Everllence has not only reduced emissions from its own production by 63 percent, but also helps reduce hard-to-abate emissions worldwide through its decarbonization solutions.

We’re not only decarbonizing our own operations—we’re providing solutions today to reduce hard-to-abate emissions in key industries such as power generation and shipping.

With its corporate strategy “Moving big things to zero,” Everllence aims to help global industries cut hard-to-abate emissions. But what about its own carbon footprint?

Our updated sustainability strategy is built on three pillars. The first, Decarbonization, covers our green tech products—from large-scale ammonia engines for shipping and compressors for carbon capture to electrolyzers for the production of green hydrogen, and the CO₂ savings associated with these. The second pillar, Nature, focuses on reducing emissions in our own production, conserving resources, and protecting biodiversity. The third, People & Society, encompasses our social responsibility, including topics such as workplace safety and human rights in the supply chain. We’ve defined specific targets for all three areas. In our own production, for example, we aim to halve CO2 emissions by 2030.

How far along is Everllence in meeting its own CO2 reduction goals?

We’re well on track. Since 2018, we’ve reduced our CO2 emissions by 63 percent—already surpassing our 2030 target. This progress was driven largely by energy efficiency measures, a shift to CO2-neutral energy sources, and the expansion of renewable energy generation at our own sites.

Nevertheless, maintaining this reduction path through to 2030 remains challenging, due to dynamic factors such as the market availability of competitive alternative fuels and our planned growth.

And what goals are there in the area of “People and Society”?

We’re committed to providing a safe and respectful work environment for all employees—regardless of age, religion, background, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, or gender. Occupational safety is also a key objective: by 2030, we aim to reduce the number of reportable workplace accidents worldwide to fewer than five.

In some areas, such as “Corporate Citizenship”—in other words, our social commitment—we don’t yet have measurable targets. We’re working on this: together with our departments, we’re developing concrete approaches this year to bring greater accountability and transparency to these efforts.

You've already touched on the topic of diversity. As is common for a mechanical engineering company, the number of female employees is still quite low. What are your plans to change that?

For us, diversity goes far beyond gender balance. With 140 locations in over 50 countries, our workforce reflects a wide range of cultural perspectives. What matters most is our open corporate culture, where everyone feels welcome to contribute their skills and unique backgrounds.

At the same time, we recognize that women play a vital role in the future success of our company, especially given the skills shortage. That’s why we place great importance on offering women development opportunities at all our sites. Women currently make up just under 17 percent of our workforce, and the share continues to grow. Through our international employer branding campaign “Women in Tech”, we aim to inspire more women to join Everllence. In management as well, we’re targeting an increase in the share of women from around ten percent today to over 16 percent by 2030.

You’ve just published a new sustainability report. What achievements from the past year stand out most?

One major milestone was the revision of our sustainability strategy. This was based on a double materiality analysis that combined the company’s own viewpoint with external perspectives to identify the topics relevant for reporting. By disclosing more topics and figures, we’ve significantly increased the transparency of our reporting.

We’ve also made strong progress in generating our own renewable energy: Our goal is to cover six percent of our energy needs with self-produced renewables, and we’ve already achieved a third of that target. In 2024 alone, we expanded our solar power generation to around 1,900 MWh.

In June 2024, Everllence inaugurated a new solar park in Frederikshavn, Denmark, which covers an area of 1,190 square meters right next to the company premises on Hjørringvej.

Together with the property owner, Everllence installed a solar system on the building housing the test benches at their Zurich site in 2024.

And where do you still see room for improvement?

A central goal is to further standardize the collection and calculations of our key sustainability metrics, making the process more efficient. A concrete example is our calculation approach for Scope 4 emissions—those emissions avoided by using our products compared to conventional technologies. As a provider of decarbonization solutions, this is where we see the greatest potential to actively contribute to climate protection.

We’ve already developed a prototype that will enable us to calculate, in a simple and comparably way, how much CO₂ a product—such as a heat pump versus a coal-fired power plant—actually avoids.

How does Everllence integrate sustainability into its daily business?

Our three strategic dimensions encompass eleven focus topics that guide our sustainability efforts—from climate action and working conditions to anti-corruption. Naturally, these topics are reflected in our processes in very different ways. Still, our strengthened sustainability strategy is an integral part of our corporate strategy, making sustainability a consideration across all business functions.

Is there a project that is particularly representative of Everllence's sustainability work?

Our heat pump in Esbjerg is a clear example of how we support our customers in decarbonization and, through our products, help decarbonize key industries—in this case, heat generation. The system replaces a coal-fired power plant, supplying 25,000 households with climate-neutral heat and saving 120,000 tons of CO₂ annually.
Heat pump installation in Esbjerg
Everllence’s 70 MW heat pump delivers approximately 280,000 MWh of climate-neutral heat each year to the district heating networks of Esbjerg and neighboring Varde.
I’d also like to highlight our gender-specific health program at the Augsburg site, titled “Frauengesundheit er#leben” (Experience Women's Health), which received the Human Resources Excellence Award in 2024. As part of occupational health management, the campaign combines personalized health assessments with practical workshops and expert talks to raise awareness of gender-specific challenges.

What sets Everllence’s sustainability approach apart from other companies?

One of our key differentiators is how deeply climate action is embedded in our corporate strategy. We’re not only decarbonizing our own operations—we’re already delivering solutions that reduce hard-to-abate emissions in industries such as energy and shipping. Decarbonization is, quite literally, our business. That’s what excites me most about working at Everllence—alongside our outstanding and highly motivated team.
