Lube oil

Lube oil: the blood of the engine

Lube oil is as essential to an engine's function as blood is to the body. When it’s in good condition, lube oil ensures rotating components – bearings, conrods, camshafts – are fully lubricated, thereby extending the machine’s lifecycle. Moreover, the quality, cleanliness, and composition of lube oil determines the efficiency of heat dispersion and cooling in an engine as well as the level of protection against corrosion.

When it becomes degraded, lube oil is a source of contamination and failures: bearings seize, cylinders scuff, pumps wear out. And the most insignificant defect can quickly result in a breakdown. In fact, 50% of engine failures result from degraded lube oil performance or the subsequent ingress of contaminates such as water, fuel, and soot.

Contamination or degradation of the lubricating oil also serves as an indicator for initiating preventive measures prior to engine failure – an approach aligned with smarter maintenance practices.

Enhancing lube oil performance through condition monitoring and smarter maintenance

Everllence PrimeServ (former MAN PrimeServ) offers products and services to ensure an engine’s general good health and long-term availability. By monitoring the condition of lubricating oil, you not only maintain its efficiency and effectiveness but also gain valuable insights into developing mechanical anomalies. This enables timely, targeted interventions that help prevent failures and breakdowns – delivering smarter, more proactive maintenance. Discover how you can benefit from Everllence’s expertise in optimizing lubrication and engine reliability.

Our lube oil services portfolio

Everllence PrimeServ’s engine fluids course covers how to apply the correct specification for machinery fuels and fluids and selecting the correct lubricant for a particular application. Upon completion, participants will understand how to interpret lube oil and other engine fluid analyses and what conclusions to draw.

This practical, hands-on training course is aimed at engine operators and maintenance teams. It is conducted in English at the Everllence PrimeServ Academies in Augsburg, Germany, or Saint-Nazaire, France. The content is also available as an e-learning course via the PrimeServ Academy website.

As part of Everllence PrimeServ’s after-sales support services, PrimeServLab analyses a range of fluids including fuel oil, lube oil, cooling water, as well as lube-oil separator control samples. By regularly testing customers’ lube oil samples, PrimeServLab experts can identify defects before they cause a major failure. The laboratory analyzes more than 8,000 fluid samples every year and, even if no specific problems are identified, their report makes practical recommendations to optimize engine operations and inspections.

Everllence Multi Fluid Monitor (MFM) is a smart maintenance solution that checks lube oil performance, quality, degradation, and contamination in real time. It’s popularity and strength lie in its simple set up and operation – just plug & play!

Continuous monitoring by the MFM allows early detection of engine lube oil anomalies before they become serious. In recent years, several major failures have been avoided thanks to the MFM solution. In one case, a small water leak was detected which resulted in replacing a leaking cylinder head as precaution; in another, a filtration issue caused by silica contamination was identified early which avoided a potential bearing seizure.

Five ways Everllence lube oil services improve engine reliability and operational control

Compliance and specification awareness
Our training courses ensure that operators understand the critical specifications of high-quality lube oils, including compliance with OEM guidelines and environmental regulations. This foundational knowledge supports informed decision-making and proper lubricant selection.

Preventive maintenance through scheduled analysis
Routine analysis of lube oil samples by Everllence PrimeServLab allows operators to detect wear particles, contamination, and chemical degradation before they escalate. These insights inform maintenance schedules, enabling timely part inspections, replacements, and oil changes – reducing the risk of unplanned outages.

Real-time risk mitigation via monitoring systems
Everllence Multi Fluid Monitor’s continuous monitoring provides real-time alerts for oil degradation or contamination. Early detection of issues such as bearing wear or scuffing allows operators to intervene before damage occurs, preserving engine integrity and avoiding costly repairs.

Enhanced diagnostic capabilities
Operators trained by us in fluid analysis can interpret alarms and correlate them with PrimeServ Lab findings to diagnose root causes more effectively. Our periodic testing complements real-time data, offering deeper insights into emerging issues and enabling proactive troubleshooting.

Protection against critical failures
When oil degrades quickly, our monitoring systems can trigger engine shutdowns to prevent catastrophic damage. This capability safeguards key components such as the crankshaft and minimizes the risk of extended downtime and high repair costs.
